Rats: The Pesky Pest You Are Likely To Run Into In Atlanta
Category: Rodent Extermination
Atlanta is one of those cities that shows up in a lot of “Top Cities” lists. In most cases that is a good thing, occasionally, not so much.
Take for example the fact that just last year our fair city ranked among the top 20 “rattiest” cites. While the good news may be we were near the tail end of the list, coming in at No. 14, it still means, as a local resident, you should be alert and aware.
Make Yourself Aware
You may have already had a rat encounter, or maybe you have managed to avoid it so far., Either way, there are a few things that you should know:
- Fall is the beginning of more than just Falcon season, it is the kickoff for rodent season. This is when pests, like rats, begin searching for food and shelter in order to prepare for cooler weather.
- Let’s be honest, any city creates the perfect conditions for rodents to thrive, and reproduce. And while they will always be around, it is keeping them in check to avoid overpopulation and infestations that matters so much.
- Spotting rats in the kitchen, residential or commercial, is the most commonly reported location. This makes sense since rodents are in search of food. Unfortunately, rodents also end up contaminating food, as well as transmit pathogens, via feces and urine.
It is important to keep an eye out for possible signs that you have a rat such as:
- Aside from physically spotting an actual rat, be on the lookout for droppings.
- Seek out entry points; rats can enter a hole the diameter of a quarter, mice a dime.
- Install weather strips or repair existing ones.
- Keep bushes and trees trimmed back to avoid giving rats a ladder to your home; three-foot clearance is best.
